Frequently Asked Questions

What are Otago Local rates?

Sometimes it pays to live just down the road.

If you call Otago home, you can access special Otago Local rates on our standard scenic train journeys. Whether you’re showing visiting friends around or rediscovering your own backyard, it’s a pretty good excuse to see your region from a different point of view.

Who qualifies for Otago Local rates?

Otago Local rates are available to residents within the Otago Regional Council area, including:

  • Dunedin City
  • Waitaki District
  • Clutha District
  • Central Otago
  • Queenstown-Lakes District

Local rates are available on our standard journeys and selected seasonal trains when seats are available. Special and event trains are excluded.

What do I need to bring to prove my Otago address?

You’ll need to show proof of your Otago address when you check in. This could be:

  • A household bill showing your Otago address
  • An Otago Regional Council or Dunedin Library card
  • A University of Otago or Otago Polytechnic student or staff ID
  • A New Zealand driver’s licence showing your Otago address
Can I bring friends from out of town?

Absolutely. Your guests will need to travel on a standard fare, while you can still take advantage of your Otago Local rate.

You can make separate local and standard bookings online, or give our booking team a call and we can help arrange everything together.

What should I know before I book?

The Taieri Gorge departs from Dunedin Railway Station at 9:30am.

Check-in opens at 8:30am and closes at 9:15am.

Make sure you understand the journey duration, departure location and any accessibility or transport requirements before completing your booking.

What are your booking and cancellation policies?

We know plans can change. If you need to cancel or move your journey, the options available depend on how far in advance you let us know.

What happens if I need to cancel my booking?

For eligible standard tickets:

  • 21 days or more before departure

You can receive a full refund.

  • 7 days or more before departure

You can receive a 50% refund or choose a gift voucher instead.

  • 48 hours or more before departure

You can exchange your ticket for another available service or travel date.

Refunds and exchanges may be subject to booking, processing or administration fees.

Please note that charters, special interest trips and one-off services are non-refundable and cannot be exchanged. Promotional fares may also have their own cancellation and exchange conditions, so please check the conditions of your ticket when booking.

What happens if you cancel my train?

If Dunedin Railway Station cancels your scheduled train service, you’ll receive a full refund of your ticket price, excluding any applicable booking or other fees.

From time to time, we may also need to make reasonable changes to a scheduled service, including departure times, stops or pick-up and drop-off locations. We’ll do our best to let affected passengers know about any changes.

What happens if I’m running late or miss my train?

Please allow plenty of time to arrive, check in and board before your scheduled departure.

If you’re running late, contact our booking office as soon as possible and make your way to the Station as quickly as you safely can.

If you miss your train because you arrive late, including because of transport delays, cruise ship delays, weather, traffic or personal circumstances, your booking will be treated as a no-show and is not automatically eligible for a refund. Any refund or credit offered in these circumstances is at the discretion of Dunedin Railway Station.

What are the cancellation policies for trade bookings?

Different conditions apply to bookings made by trade partners and travel agents.

Trade bookings can be changed, adjusted or cancelled up to 30 days before departure. Within 30 days of departure, no refunds, exchanges or amendments are available.
