When should you visit?

There is no single season for exploring Dunedin and Otago.

The coast and inland parts of the region can experience quite different conditions, and every season changes the character of the landscape.

Summer

Long daylight hours make summer well suited to combining rail with wider exploration.

Autumn

Cooler temperatures and changing colours make autumn particularly distinctive further inland.

Winter

Expect colder conditions, particularly away from the coast, and plan for shorter daylight hours when building longer itineraries.

Spring

Longer days return, but weather can remain changeable. Layers and flexible plans are useful.
