A different journey throughout the year
The railway changes with the seasons.
Dunedin's coastal climate and the inland landscapes of the Taieri Gorge can experience different conditions on the same day, so it's worth preparing for changing weather whenever you travel.

Summer
Longer days and warmer conditions make summer a popular time to travel. Even on warm days, bring an extra layer for changing conditions and time spent on viewing platforms.

Autumn
Changing light and cooler temperatures bring a different character to the landscape. Layered clothing is useful as mornings and afternoons can feel quite different.

Winter
Winter journeys can bring crisp conditions, low light and a more dramatic side to the landscape. Dress warmly and bring a weatherproof outer layer.

Spring
Spring conditions can change quickly, with sunshine, wind and rain all possible during a single journey. Bring layers and prepare for variable weather.
Does the train operate in bad weather?
Our scenic train journeys can operate in a wide range of weather conditions. However, railway operating conditions and passenger safety always come first.
