The People Behind the Railway

Railways are built and kept moving by people

Behind every journey is a team of people working across the railway.

Drivers and train crew keep the journey moving. Storytellers bring the route to life. Guest Services welcome passengers at the station. Behind the scenes, teams work across operations, maintenance, customer experience, partnerships and the station itself.

Our storytellers

The landscapes outside the window are only part of the journey. Our onboard storytellers share the histories, engineering, communities and characters connected with the railway as you travel.

Keeping the railway moving

Maintaining and operating a railway requires specialist knowledge and ongoing work, much of it happening long before passengers arrive at the station.

A history of community support

Volunteers have also played an important part in the scenic railway's story. The involvement of railway enthusiasts and the Otago Excursion Train Trust helped establish the excursion operation and preserve the railway through the Taieri Gorge.
