A heritage you can still travel through

Railway heritage at Dunedin Railway Station isn't confined to displays or photographs.

It can be found in the station building, the railway itself, the engineering along the route and the trains still carrying passengers today.

The Station

Opened in 1906, Dunedin Railway Station remains one of the city's most recognisable heritage landmarks.

The Railway

The historic railway through the Taieri Gorge was built in the late 19th century as part of the Otago Central Railway. Sections of that railway continue to carry our scenic passenger trains today.

The scenic railway

Community excursions, the Otago Excursion Train Trust and the campaign to save the railway helped transform part of a former transport route into the scenic railway experience that continues today.

Heritage that's still moving

What makes this railway heritage different is that it remains part of a living experience. Passengers can still leave Dunedin Railway Station by train and travel along railway infrastructure built more than a century ago.
