Frequently Asked Questions

Where do the trains depart from?

Our scenic train journeys depart from Dunedin Railway Station, 22 Anzac Avenue in central Dunedin.

Is Dunedin Railway Station still a working railway station?

Yes. Scenic passenger trains depart throughout the year, and other passenger rail operators also use the station on selected dates.

How early should I arrive?

Check-in times vary by journey. Your booking confirmation will show the timing for your service.

Is seating allocated?

Yes. Seating details are provided at check-in.

Is food available onboard?

Yes. An onboard café operates on all scenic train journeys, with food and drinks available to purchase. We recommend bringing some cash in case limited mobile coverage affects card payment availability.

Are there toilets onboard?

Yes. All of our passenger carriages have toilet facilities.

Can I bring a bike?

Bikes can be carried on The Taieri Gorge by advance booking, with capacity for up to 10 bikes.

Are the trains wheelchair accessible?

One carriage has a wheelchair lift and is available on selected services by prior arrangement. The lift has a maximum capacity of 200kg and maximum dimensions of 900mm long by 700mm wide. Contact info@dunedinrailways.co.nz at least 3 business days before travel to confirm availability before booking.

Can children travel?

Yes. Children are welcome on regular scenic services, although some seasonal or special experiences have age restrictions.

Can I take a one-way journey?

One-way tickets are available on The Taieri Gorge and can be combined with onward travel options.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Services operate in a range of conditions, but passenger safety and railway operating conditions take priority. If Dunedin Railway Station cancels your scheduled service, the ticket price is refunded excluding booking and other fees.

Can cruise passengers book a public train journey?

Yes, if a public service is operating and its timing fits comfortably within the ship's visit. Passengers booking independently are responsible for transport between Port Chalmers and Dunedin Railway Station and for returning to their ship on time.

Can I change or cancel my booking?

Refund and exchange options depend on the service and how far in advance the request is made. See Booking & Cancellation Information for the applicable timeframes and exclusions.
