Pack for the journey, not just the weather in Dunedin

Our trains travel through changing landscapes and conditions can be different from those in central Dunedin. A few simple things can make your journey more comfortable.

Layers

Bring layers you can add or remove throughout the day. Carriages have heating and air conditioning, but temperatures can change if you step onto a viewing platform or leave the train during an eligible stop.

A weatherproof layer

Dunedin and inland Otago weather can change quickly. A light waterproof or windproof outer layer is useful year-round.

Comfortable footwear

Wear comfortable, secure footwear. This is particularly important if your journey includes an opportunity to step off the train, where surfaces may be uneven.

Bring some cash

An onboard café operates on all our scenic train journeys, with food and drinks available to purchase.

We recommend bringing some cash with you. Our trains travel through areas with limited mobile coverage, which can sometimes affect card payment availability.

Camera or phone

There is plenty to see along the railway, from historic engineering to changing landscapes. Bring your camera or phone, but remember to take some time to simply enjoy the view.

Water and personal essentials

Bring water and any personal items or medication you may need for the duration of your journey.
