Planning an accessible rail journey
We want every passenger to have the information they need to decide whether a journey will be suitable for them and to plan ahead where assistance is required.
Accessibility varies between Dunedin Railway Station, our classic railway carriages and the destinations visited along the railway. If you have accessibility requirements or you're unsure whether any part of your journey will be suitable, please contact our team before booking.
Every passenger's needs are different, and our team will do their best to find ways to make your journey more comfortable.
Wheelchair access
We have one carriage equipped with a wheelchair lift, available on request on selected services.
- Maximum weight: 200kg
- Maximum length: 900mm
- Maximum width: 700mm
Capacity is limited and the accessible carriage is not available on every service.
Please email info@dunedinrailways.co.nz at least 3 business days before travel so our team can confirm availability before you book.
Boarding the train
Ramps are available to assist passengers with limited mobility when boarding at Dunedin Railway Station and most destinations.
These boarding ramps are suitable for passengers using walking aids or who need additional assistance, but they are not suitable for wheelchair access. Wheelchair users require the dedicated wheelchair lift and accessible carriage described above.
Accessibility can also vary at destinations along the route. There are no boarding ramps at Pukerangi.
If your journey includes getting off the train, contact us before booking if you'd like to understand the accessibility of a particular stop or experience.
Walking aids
Walking aids, including walking frames, are welcome onboard.
Ramps can assist passengers with limited mobility when boarding the train, and our team can provide information before travel about what to expect when getting on and off.
If you're bringing a larger mobility aid, please let us know in advance so we can discuss storage and access.
Seating & limited mobility
If you have limited mobility, you can request a seat that may make your journey more comfortable.
Contact our team before travelling and we'll do our best to accommodate your request, although specific seating cannot be guaranteed.
Seating is allocated at check-in.
Toilets onboard
Toilet facilities are available in all of our passenger carriages, with an accessible toilet located in our wheelchair-accessible carriage.
If you have specific accessibility requirements, please contact our team before booking so we can confirm the facilities available on your journey.
Accessibility beyond mobility
Accessibility needs aren't always related to mobility.
If you have hearing or vision requirements, a hidden disability, or anything else that may affect your journey, please let us know before you travel.
Our team can talk through the journey with you and help identify where we may be able to provide assistance.
Accessibility at different stops
Not every location along our railway has the same level of accessibility as Dunedin Railway Station.
Some experiences may involve uneven ground, steps, narrow areas or locations where accessible disembarkation isn't possible. Stops can also vary by journey and operating conditions.
The Taieri Gorge: There are no boarding ramps at Pukerangi.
The Seasider: Accessibility varies by stop. Confirm destination-specific requirements with our team before booking.
Seasonal & Special Journeys: Accessibility varies depending on the train, destination and experience. Contact us before booking.
Accessibility at Dunedin Railway Station
Dunedin Railway Station is the departure point for our scenic train journeys. Ramps are available to assist with boarding, and passengers who have arranged use of the wheelchair-accessible carriage will be assisted with the dedicated lift.
