Watch the landscape change by rail

Our scenic train journeys travel through two very different sides of the landscape around Dunedin.

Head inland and the railway enters the Taieri Gorge. Travel north and it follows the Pacific coastline.

The railway gives each a different perspective.

The Taieri Gorge

Beyond the Taieri Plains, the railway enters steep and remote terrain as it follows the gorge towards Pukerangi. Historic bridges, viaducts and tunnels become part of the landscape as the railway makes its way inland.

A blue and yellow train crosses a tall steel viaduct spanning a rocky, grassy gorge between rolling hills.

The Pacific coast

The Seasider travels north from Dunedin as the railway follows the coastline past bays, coastal settlements and stretches of the Pacific Ocean.

The Seasider train travels along a narrow causeway beside a body of water within Dunedin with a rolling green hill in the background.

Different every season

Weather, light and the seasons continually change what you see outside the window. No two journeys look quite the same.
