Scenic trains still leave from here

Dunedin Railway Station isn't only somewhere to learn about railway history. It's somewhere you can still board a train.

Our scenic train journeys travel inland through the Taieri Gorge and north along the Pacific coastline, with seasonal and special departures offering even more ways to experience the railway throughout the year.

The Taieri Gorge

Travel from Dunedin to Pukerangi on our flagship scenic rail journey through the Taieri Gorge.

Follow a historic railway into landscapes accessible only by rail, travelling through hand-carved tunnels and across bridges and viaducts built more than a century ago.

Duration: Approximately 5 hours return

The Taieri Gorge train crosses the famous heritage Wingatui viaduct through a forested valley.

The Seasider

Travel north from Dunedin as the railway follows the Pacific coastline.

The Seasider offers several ways to experience the journey, from the standard return trip to Merton to selected full-day journeys continuing north to Ōamaru.

The Seasider train travels along a narrow causeway beside a body of water within Dunedin with a rolling green hill in the background.

Seasonal & Special Journeys

Throughout the year, our railway becomes the setting for a changing programme of special experiences.

From Stargazer journeys to family events, festival trains and one-off collaborations, each offers a different reason to get onboard.

Numerous sailboats are anchored and docked in a calm, dark blue Dunedin bay surrounded by forested hills.

Every journey starts at the Station

Our scenic train journeys depart from Dunedin Railway Station in central Dunedin.

Check-in times and departure information vary between journeys, so check the details for your selected experience before arriving.
